Résumé | Liens | BibTeX | Étiquettes: Fluid Structure interaction, Wave propagation @article{Julien_2022, Fuel rod cladding failure in a nuclear reactor produces different phenomena related to vibrations and fluid–structure interaction. The most significant aspect of those phenomena is the creation of a pressure wave at the failure position and its propagation in the coolant fluid flowing around the fuel rod. An accurate understanding of the propagation of the pressure wave around the fuel rod can help us design a method to detect a failure, determine its position, and estimate some of its characteristics with a single and simple sensor, such as a pressure sensor or a piezoelectric acoustic sensor, that can be mounted relatively far from the failure. Such a method can be useful for the monitoring of nuclear fuel rods, where instrumentation possibilities are restricted (because of neutron flux, radiation, high temperature, and available space) as well as for any kind of application involving annular ducts and limited instrumentation possibilities. The current paper is related to the specific application of nuclear fuel rod monitoring. It deals with preliminary numerical simulations that are necessary to know the evolution of a fluid pressure profile along the system containing the rod. They are carried out by finite element methods, using the EUROPLEXUS code. They provide the necessary information about the propagation of pressure waves around the rod to design measurement and signal processing methods as well as properly interpret experimental results from tests in industrial reactors, research reactors, or experimental mock-ups. They also provide some information that could not be experimentally obtained because of the constraints in a nuclear environment. Despite the specific application we show in this article, similar calculation methods, theoretical observations, and results interpretations can be easily adapted to the other mentioned applications. |

Résumé | Liens | BibTeX | Étiquettes: Fluid Structure interaction, Induced oscillations, Seismic excitation @article{Capanna_2022, Bundle motion of a pressurized water reactor core under seismic excitation induces a pulsatile oscillatory flow which can strongly affect the behaviour of the whole reactor. Understanding these phenomena is thus a primary concern for the nuclear industry. An index matched experimental facility was recently built allowing the study of a surrogate fuel bundle under axial flow undergoing a seismic excitation. The use of a fluid which is refractive index matched with the transparent surrogate bundle allows to perform non-intrusive particle image velocimetry measurements over the whole fluid domain. This paper focuses on experiments performed with a shaking table frequency close to the first resonance mode of the bundle under otherwise stagnant water. The local flow induced by the oscillation of the fuel bundle is then observed. Three significant dataset are analysed to understand how very small changes in the structural behaviour of the fuel bundle can lead to important changes in the flow field. A proper orthogonal decomposition of the bundle excitation shows that the higher modes (even if they have small amplitudes) can contribute significantly to the flow induced in the channel. A numerical simulation based on the potential flow theory simulates the experimental conditions and provides a physical interpretation of the observed phenomena. |

As they are an interesting extension of the linear normal modes (LNMs), numerical methods are needed to estimate these oscillatory motions, generally including continuation aspects with respect to the circular frequency. In this paper, a continuation method combined to a model reduction based on Proper Generalized Decomposition (PGD) technique is described. This formulation mixes PGD, harmonic balance method (HBM) and basic continuation techniques in order to reach a highly reduced description of the NNMs. This PGD/HBM-based continuation algorithm includes a modal enrichment as the NNM energy grows. The method is applied to two conservative problems including a cubic spring and a unilateral contact. |

Résumé | Liens | BibTeX | Étiquettes: Phase Driven FRF, Polynomial Chaos Expansion (PCE), Stochastic, Structural dynamics @article{Sarrouy_2019, This work addresses the computation of dynamic responses of stochastic linear systems using polynomial chaos expansion. As is now well known, polynomial chaos does not offer an accurate representation of dynamic response around resonances when the responses are evaluated for several frequency values. A new parametrization of the frequency response function is then proposed: instead of considering the frequency as the main parameter, a ''total phase'' parameter is defined and used to define the dynamical system to be solved. It is shown via two applications that this approach offers very accurate results when conjugated to polynomial chaos with low degree. |

Résumé | Liens | BibTeX | Étiquettes: Coupling, Experimental, Fluid Structure interaction, Fuel assemblies, Seismic excitation @article{Capanna_2019a, Accurate knowledge of the mechanical behaviour of the reactor core is needed to estimate the effects of a seismic excitation on a nuclear power plant. Experimental works are needed in order to validate models and to have a better understanding of involved phenomena. The fuel assemblies, in the reactor core, are subjected to an axial water flow which modifies their dynamical behaviour. In this framework a new experimental facility, ICARE, is designed in order to investigate fluid structure interaction phenomena on half scale fuel assemblies. The design of the ICARE experimental facility allows to emphasise the effects of the coupling between different fuel assemblies due to the presence of the water flow. In this paper a brief review of previous experimental facilities is presented and the new ICARE experimental facility is illustrated. ICARE facility consists in 4 half scale fuel assemblies (2Ã2 lattice) in a vertical channel submitted to axial flow; one of the assemblies is excited by an hydraulic jack. The aim of this paper is to discuss the experimental results obtained during four experimental campaigns on the ICARE set-up. First, the mechanical behaviour of a single fuel assembly is analysed, and the effect of different experimental parameters is assessed. Added mass, added damping and added stiffness effects due to the water flow are estimated. Later, the coupling between different assemblies is investigated. The presence of the flow induces hydrodynamic effects on non excited fuel assemblies, both on excitation direction and transversal one. Furthermore the increase of the water flow causes the increase of the coupling forces and gives rise to a static coupling between the assemblies. |

Résumé | Liens | BibTeX | Étiquettes: Multi-Element Generalized Polynomial Chaos, Random vibration, Uncertainty propagation @article{Chouvion_2016, Abstract This paper presents and compares different methodologies to create an adaptive stochastic space partitioning in polynomial chaos applications which use a multi-element approach. To implement adaptive partitioning, Wan and Karniadakis first developed a criterion based on the relative error in local variance. We propose here two different error criteria: one based on the residual error and the other on the local variance discontinuity created by partitioning. The methods are applied to classical differential equations with long-term integration difficulties, including the Kraichnan–Orszag three-mode problem, and to simple linear and nonlinear mechanical systems whose stochastic dynamic responses are investigated. The efficiency and robustness of the approaches are investigated by comparison with Monte-Carlo simulations. For the different examples considered, they show significantly better convergence characteristics than the original error criterion used. |

Résumé | Liens | BibTeX | Étiquettes: Global analysis @article{Sarrouy_2010, Introducing non-linearities into models contributes towards a better reality description but leads to systems having multiple solutions. It is then legitimate to look for all the solutions of such systems, that is to have a global analysis approach. However no effective method can be found in literature for systems described by more than two or three degrees of freedom. We propose in this paper a way to find all T-periodic solutions--where T is known--of a non-linear dynamical system. This method is compared to three other approaches and is shown to be the most efficient on a Duffing oscillator. As a more complex example, a rotor model including a squeeze-film damper is studied and a second branch of solutions is exhibited. |

Résumé | Liens | BibTeX | Étiquettes: Fluid Structure interaction @inproceedings{Capanna_2017, Efficient modelling and accurate knowledge of the mechanical behaviour of the reactor core are needed to estimate the effects of seismic excitation on a nuclear power plant. The fuel assemblies (in the reactor core) are subjected to an axial water flow which modifies their dynamical behaviour. Several fluid-structure models simulating the response of the core to a seismic load has been developed in recent years; most of them require high computational costs. The work which is presented here is a first step in order to simplify the fluid forces modelling, and thus to be able to catch the main features of the mechanical behaviour of reactor core with low computational costs. The main assumption made in this work is to consider the fluid flow as an inviscid potential flow. Thus, the flow can be described only using one scalar function (velocity potential) instead of a vector field and strongly simplifies the fluid mechanics equations, avoiding the necessity to solve Navier-Stokes equations. The pressure distribution around a cylinder is first solved in Fourier space for different values of the parameters (wavenumber, confinement size). The method is applied to a simple geometry (cylinder in an axial flow with a variable confinement) in order to test its effectiveness. The empirical model is then compared to simulations and reference works in literature. The configuration with large confinement has been solved, and results were in agreement with Slender Body Theory. The dependency on the confinement size strongly depends on the wavenumber, but in any case added mass increases as the confinement size decreases. Finally, future perspectives to extend the model to a group of cylinders and to improve the model are discussed (i.e. add viscosity to the model). |
